5+1 logbook requirements, in plain English

Last updated 24 July 2026

Everything on this page is drawn from the Psychology Board of Australia's current documents — the Guidelines for the 5+1 internship (December 2025) and the logbook form, LBPP-76 (effective 1 December 2025) — restated in plain English. PsychLog is independent and not affiliated with Ahpra or the Psychology Board; always confirm against the Board documents, which are linked throughout. You remain responsible for your own compliance.

What must a 5+1 logbook record?

The Board's logbook (form LBPP-76) has three sections, and all three must be kept for the whole internship. Section A records professional practice: every session or activity with its date, a de-identified client ID, what you did, hours of client contact and client-related activity, the competencies demonstrated, and your reflections. Section B records education and training activities with dates, details, topics and hours. Section C records every supervision session — date, supervisor, format, duration, and a summary including your supervisor's feedback.

The numbers at a glance

  • 1,500 hoursof psychological practice in total, over a minimum of 44 weeks full-time equivalent (up to 8 weeks' leave can be taken on top).
  • 500 hours minimum of client contact within the 1,500 — simulated client contact counts toward it, capped at 60 hours.
  • 80 hours minimum of supervision, of which at least 50 must be direct, individual supervision from your principal supervisor; group and secondary-supervisor hours count up to 30.
  • At least 1 supervision hour per 18 internship hours across the program.
  • 60 hours minimum of education and training, approved by your supervisor.
  • 4 directly observed sessions every 6 months — at least 2 assessments and 2 interventions.

What counts as client contact?

The Board defines client contact as “the performance of the specific tasks of psychological assessment, diagnosis, intervention, prevention, treatment, consultation, and provision of advice and strategies directly with clients under the guidance of the supervisor” (LBPP-76). If you are doing psychological work directly with a client — including by phone or telehealth — it is client contact.

What counts as client-related activity?

Client-related activity covers “those activities considered necessary to provide a high standard of service to clients and to support the provisional psychologist's achievement of the professional competencies” (LBPP-76) — for example, reading and research to assist problem formulation and diagnosis, case consultation with colleagues, report writing, and session preparation. Your supervisor guides what counts.

Does the logbook need to be signed? How often?

Yes. The Board requires the record of practice to be sighted and signed by your supervisor regularly — usually weekly — and reviewed when your supervision plan is reviewed or a supervisor changes. Each supervision entry is initialled by the supervisor who provided the session, and each education entry by the supervisor who reviewed it. The Board can ask to see your logbook at any time, with 14 days' notice to produce it.

What are the supervision requirements?

Supervision must run for the full internship, provided frequently — usually weekly. At least 80 hours in total, with at least 50 hours of direct, individual supervision from your principal supervisor; group sessions and secondary supervisors can contribute up to 30 countable hours. Overall supervision must keep pace with practice at a ratio of at least 1 hour per 18 internship hours. After each session, a Section C entry records what was discussed, outcomes, and your supervisor's feedback and evaluative comments.

What direct observations are required?

Your supervisor must directly observe your work with clients at least 4 times every 6 months: a minimum of 2 observed assessment sessions and 2 observed intervention sessions. Observation can be in the room, via recording, or through a one-way screen — and each observed session is recorded in the logbook against its supervision entry.

What about education and training?

At least 60 hours across the internship: workshops, seminars, conferences, lectures, short courses, and structured reading or audiovisual learning — including National Psychology Exam preparation. Activities should be approved by your supervisor against your learning goals, and you should keep verification (certificates, receipts, notes) in a portfolio of evidence: the Board may request it for audit at any time.

What is the six-month progress review?

Every six months, you and your principal supervisor complete a progress review against the Board's template: your practice, supervision and education hours for the period and accrued, how each professional competency has been addressed, your learning needs, and your supervisor's assessment of each competency. The review is kept with your records rather than submitted — unless the Board asks for it.

Where do these requirements come from?

Two documents govern the 5+1 logbook: the Guidelines for the 5+1 internship (December 2025 edition) and the logbook form LBPP-76 (effective 1 December 2025). Both are published on the Psychology Board's website; the copies linked here were downloaded from the Board's site and are provided so they open in your browser.
